A new route for Baltic container freight is planned to go from Šestokai on Lithuania’s border with Poland via Riga to Tallinn, state-owned Latvijas dzelzceļš (LDz) said.

Representatives of Latvijas dzelzceļš, representatives of the Lithuanian state railway company AB Lietuvos geležinkeliai and representatives of the Estonian railway company EVR Cargo plan to co-operate in order to streamline the operation of freight wagons along the 650 kilometre route.

They agreed to develop a competitive tariff offer and a container shipping timetable, and also to prepare a plan to entice freight companies who do not currently use rail infrastructure for their transport.

The participants of the meeting agreed to share the experience of organizing freight transportation in all three Baltic States, as well as consider the possibility of introducing an electronic documents system to clients.
