During the past year, the value of exports of beef and lamb from Scotland has increased to over £80 million. But almost 90% of the volume is to EU member states, which means they are not really ‘exports’ but intra-EU trade.
Speaking at the Anuga trade fair in Cologne, the Quality Meat Scotland chairman revealed the results of its annual exporters’ survey, recording an increase in value by 9% in the year ending August 2017.
He said the figures sent a positive signal to Scottish exporters and those working in the wider red meat industry: “This strengthening of export demand is a very clear indication that, despite the on-going challenges of the global economy and the uncertainty generated by the Brexit negotiation process, overseas demand for Scotch Beef PGI and Scotch Lamb PGI remains strong.”
