A third Gothard tunnel through the Alps is nearing completion, which will reduce journey time between Zurich and Milan by one hour. Switzerland has always promoted freight by rail as the best option, and this tunnel will shorten freight delivery times considerably as the wagons reach 160 kph through the tunnel. At 4000 tonnes the freight trains will carry twice the current amount of containers shipping between Switzerland the the rest of Europe, which will take pressure off the Swiss road network and show the rest of the world the future for land based freight haulage.
