Network Rail will be demolishing a bridge at Kennington over the Christmas break a replacing it with a bigger one.  This is part of ongoing work to improve the freight carrying capacity of of the rail network.  At the moment, high cube freight containers from Southampton docks have to be transported on low trucks, which reduces the carrying capacity.  Network Rail’s spokesman said, ‘Britain relies on rail freight….which contributes £870m to the economy and producted 76 per cent less carbon dioxide than road freight.’
