Shanghai first overtook Singapore in volume throughput in September last year – since then the lead position has alternated between the two ports, with Shanghai expected to finally take the lead.  Traffic through Shanghai is mainly exports from factories in the Yangtze River delta.  Hong Kong is losing market share to ports on the mainland of China, including Shenzhen and Guangzhou because the port charges at Hong Kong are higher, although it is more efficient than China’s ports.
