The Road Haulage Association has put out a statement today saying that freight truck drivers are abusing their tachographs by jamming them with magnets. When these recorders were initially introduced in the UK, they were unpopular in the freight and logistics industry, but were eventually welcomed when drivers and operators realised that cheating of the old manual systems led to accidents. Now digital tachographs are being abused, mainly by foreign vehicles. The punishment is often only a £200 fixed penalty fine, which is not considered to be sufficiently severe by the Road Haulage Association.
