Over the next 10 years Network Rail is intending to make major investments in order to increase the efficiency and speed of both passenger and freight services.  On 16 February they unveiled their plans, which include the improvement of freight capacity by doubling the paths from the West coast main line to Trafford Park.  This will enable the network to carry larger freight containers.  By removing bottlenecks and increasing the speed of trains, Network Rail plans to keep freight on the rails and lorries off the roads.  Rail freight volumes have increased by about 60% over the past 10 years.
