A major European rail freight operator has blamed the high cost of using Eurotunnel for the lack of growth in European rail freight. They argue that the high tolls charged by Eurotunnel have limited growth, particularly in the long haul international freight sector. Over the past two years, Eurotunnel has been reducing its freight tariffs with some success, but passengers still take priority on the European rail system as a whole. The tunnel was originally designed as a service for passengers, even though it is supposed to take at least 50% of its traffic as freight.
