A shipping analyst estimates that Super Slow Steaming is saving shipping lines between 5 – 7% on fuel costs.  The measure was adopted during the second half of 2009, partly as a cost saving measure, and partly to absorb surplus shipping capacity.  It is estimated that the use of SSS on some loops has absorbed about 2% of excess capacity.
