Several Japanese shipping lines are developing systems which should help to improve the efficiency of fuel use in ships and therefore reduce their carbon footprint.  One of these projects, which is being developed in conjunction with the government, is a fuel additive which improves fuel burn by about 1.4%.  At least four different major shipping lines are working on projects to make freight cleaner.
