A British haulage firm is going to test the law on superlorries by actually using one on the road; the government says that 25 Metre freight lorries are not legal for British roads, but the transport company’s lawyers disagree, and think that the only way to get a firm ruling is to test the law. The argument in favour is that the superlorries have the same freight payload as traditional trucks – 44 tonnes – but can carry a much higher volume of lighter products. Two superlorries would replace three traditional ones, so they argue that carbon emissions would be reduced. Opponents argue that the larger lorries would attract freight away from the railways, and that "The freight industry can always make an argument that if we have bigger lorries we’ll have fewer lorries – it hasn’t happened in the past, it won’t happen in the future."
