Whilst it is difficult to gather statistics for the road freight market, due to its fragmentation and the fact that most government statistics are out of date by the time they are published, trade and GDP figures can be used to indicate the health or otherwise of the market. In the second quarter of 2009, the total number of freight vehicles travelling from the United Kingdom to Europe declined by 19%. Transalpine traffic between Switzerland and Italy declined by a similar amount. These are both indicators of the reduction in volumes for road freight; it seems that the firms most likely to suffer are those in the medium size range, whilst very large and very small logistics and freight firms are sufficiently flexible to adapt to differing market conditions.
