The French government is hoping that investment in rail freight will take more than 2 million truck journeys per year off the road, and reduce carbon emissions by more than 2 million tons.  They plan to set up a network of rail ‘motorways’ switching more containers to rail, develop high speed rail links between airports, and encourage local rail freight operators.  Unions are worried that this will result in huge job losses.
