The rail freight industry has been investing heavily in rolling stock and rail facilities at ports and terminals, with a view to increasing the amount of intermodal cargo being carried by rail for part of the journey.  Forecasts suggest that there will be significant opportunities for rail to carry a greater share of the nation’s goods, especially imports which arrive at the major ports in the south east.  The ports have set themselves a target of distributing a third of their import freight by rail. This should help the government achives their targets for CO2 reductions, as emissions from rail freight are around one third of road freight.
