The inland port of Vienna in Austria acts both as a distribution centre and a transit port for intermodal freight; every week 85 container trains depart from Vienna to the northern seaports.  The port managers are so optimistic that they are beginning to fill in the port basin in the Friedenau section of the port.  This will generate about 70 000 sq M of land for further physical expansion.  Last year, the port registered its best result for the past nine years – the volume increased by 7%, making it the undoubted leader in Austria.  Volume throughput held up in the first quarter of 2009, although they are expecting a reduction in the amount of cars to be handled in 2009.
