The Armed Forces in Sweden have issued a statement saying that personnel from HMS Malmo have pursued and arrested seven pirates in the Gulf of Aden in the early housrs of Tuesday morning.

The Swedish Navy has been patrolling the Gulf of Aden since February, primarily to protect food aid on its way to Somalia.  The pirates were attempting to board a Greek freight vessel on its way from the Yemen to Somalia; the vessel managed to send out a distress signal, and HMS Malmo responded.  The Swedish corvette gave chase to the pirates who were attempting to escape, and apprehended seven of them who were on a small fishing boat.

They were taken to Djibouti on HMS Malmo to await instructions from the EU Naval command.

The Swedish navy has been patrolling the Gulf of Aden since May 15th with HMS Malmo, HMS Stockholm and the support ship Trosso.
