Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon announced a new approach to freight with the objective of keeping environmental damage to a minimum. The Government has allocated £67m to cut freight costs and emissions – an example of this is the Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving Programme, which has so far trained about 10 000 drivers. The Department has also announced funding of over £330 m to allow more freight on the East Coast mainline and North London line.
