Using the Department for Transport GB Freight Model, forecasts of demand for rail freight to 2015 and 2030 have been published. It is expected that the volume will more than double by 2030; but the increase in multi-modal traffic is expected to be much higher. The freight industry anticipates an increasing demand from shippers who are trying to reduce their use of the congested road system by moving their containers on the railway system.
