Shanghai is expanding with the completion of its new container terminal, Yangshan.  The new freight terminal opened in December 2007, and currently consists of four berths.  New roads have been built to cope with the increased traffic, and this has encouraged shippers to use Yangshan in preference to Waigoaqiao, which has shallower berths.  This has meant that shipping through the terminal has greatly increased this year, and Shanghai has now overtaken Hong Kong as the world’s second largest container port.
