A new freight-carrying ferry service between Dover and Boulogne is being planned for next year.  This means that goods produced in South West France and Spain can cross the Channel without the long road journey to Calais.  This should reduce heavy traffic on the A16.  There is a large industrial area in Boulogne itself, which sends thousands of trailers on to the main road, thus increasing congestion. The new service will provide four sailings per day, and the transit time will be approximately one hour forty-five minutes.
