Yesterday 220 lorries converged on the capital to register their protest at the high level of excise duty on diesel. They say that this tax makes puts them at a disadvantage against their European competitors. The protest was supported by the Road Haulage Association and the Transport Association. Drivers went into the House of Commons to lobby their MPs for a rebate of 25 pence per litre on diesel for ‘essential users.’ There are fears that if their requests are not met, there may be more drastic action to come, such as wildcat strikes and oil refinery blockades.
