Those of us working in smoke-free offices should spare a thought for quay crane drivers. In theory, their cabins are air-conditioned and designed to be airtight,
but in practice they may not be. Crane operators can sometimes be only three metres away from a ship’s stack and could be breathing in substantial quantities
ship stack exhaust. A leading marine insurance company has suggested that cabins should be monitored for air quality during operations, and that measures should be
taken to counter exposure to emissions.
