The WINTECC project (wind propulsion technology for cargo vessels) will test SkySails the first industry-accepted kite system with automatic control on the cargo vessel MV "Beluga SkySails". The Kite has an aerodynamic profile like an aeroplanes wings and is flown ahead of the vessel. As well as working downwind the kite can operate on angles of up to 50 degrees to the wind. Savings of up to 15% in fuel consumption are expected with the initial kite, which will in due course be doubled in size to 320 square metres with the expected effect of doubling bunker fuel savings to 30%.
