Workers affiliated with the customs officers’ union are on strike across Sri Lanka as from March 19. They are calling for the urgent resolution of issues regarding the management of funds and incentives. The action which began March 15 and has caused around 4,000 containers being held up at ports.
Further cargo and freight delays are likely if the strike becomes protracted.
Striking workers could stage low-level demonstrations near ports as part of the action. Disruptions to freight shipping could extend for several days after the strike ends as service providers work to clear the backlogs.
