The East African Community is discussing the possibility of inceasing taxes on imports.
The maximum Common External Tariff import rate has been 25 percent, but has risen to 35 percent.
The CET is considered an important instrument of EAC Customs Union Protocol;it determines the tax paid on imports from outside the Union. Currently, raw materials imports attract zero percent tax, intermediate goods imports 10 percent and finished products imports attract 25 percent levy.
