Estonian Railways (EVR) may need state financial support to cover this year’s costs caused by the termination of freight transport from Russia. EVR is looking for new markets in Central Asia, because cargo shipping on the Black Sea has been reduced due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Rail freight volumes increased last year following a period of stagnation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Nearly half of all freight shipped by rail was fertilizer. Fertilizer imports from Russia of are now banned.
