A combination of port congestion, container shortages and wider supply chain disruption has caused supply and demand for containers to be unbalanced.

This disruption has three elements – onward intermodal connections for freight; the container terminal itself; and then the shipping considerations. Imbalances of container boxes were also relevant at the start of the supply chain crisis.
