Alphonso mango exports from the region of Maharashtra in India are on the decline. These mangoes have a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, which is used on products with a specific geographical origin indicating quality and distinctiveness.
GI may become a major advantage for exports, and the Marketing Board has therefore decided to introduce incentives for GI products to encourage mango and other agriculture commodity exports.
Mangoes are exported to various countries including Japan, Korea and Europe. New markets such as the US and Australia have recently opened up.
The State Marketing Board used to give a grant of Rs 30,000 per container for export by the sea route, but this has now ceased so other incentives will be on offer.
