During the current mango season, three consignments from Pakistan have been intercepted in Europe. If there are two more interceptions and the country may face a ban on exports to the EU.
Pakistan exported about 91,700 tons of mangoes during the fruit season in 2014 compared to 102,000 tons in 2013. The European exports represent about 5% in total mango exports but are highly lucrative.
Despite the decline in exports, exporters and growers earned more than double the amount they fetched in 2013, due to stringent quality standards applied by the government for exports to the EU in 2014.
As a result, the interceptions in Europe dropped sharply from 236 consignments in 2013 to just three in 2014.
