A report by a leading international bank shows that British manufacturers – particularly in the automotive, pharmaceutical and machinery industries – have started to import more semi-finished parts, allowing them to focus on value added. But this increase in imports is not necessarily a bad thing. Manufacturers are now making premium, finished products, which, in turn, are exported around the world to satisfy the demands of emerging markets and new consumers.

So it can be argued that an increase in imports helps exports.
