A major cross border freight transport route between France and Spain was closed earlier this week by violent forest fires in the Catalonia region. Cross border traffic for freight and passengers was severely disrupted on Sunday when strong winds gusting up to 55mph caused the fires to propagate rapidly.

On Monday morning, a number of freight lorries which were blocked in the Spanish border town, La Jonquera, close to which a large blaze had spread late on Sunday, were authorised to leave for the motorway.
