South Africa Freight strike
Strikes by port and freight workers in South Africa have caused bad feeling and damaged the country’s reputation prior to hosting the World Cup later this month. Industry observers also say that the strike at the nationally owned logistics company has damaged agricultural sector workers; large quantities of fresh produce have been left to rot and buyers have had to source their supplies elsewhere. Some fruit exporters are paying air freight rates, so the airlines may be the only sector to benefit.
According to the company, 65% of the workforce has now returned to work. A reward is being offered for information about saboteurs who the company says are responsible for sabotaging freight locomotives.
