As reported on 3 July, there have been a number of protests and lobbying actions by UK hauliers, asking the government to reconsider the rate of duty on diesel used in freight carrying vehicles. It was recently announced that the intended increase of 2p per litre duty planned for October, has been postponed until April 2009. Commentators have suggested that this is purely a cynical vote-catching ploy - what the haulage industry really wants is a preferential rate of duty for 'essential' diesel fuel use.
